If you’re considering a Bucket List holiday to South America, and one of your reasons for travelling is to get up close and personal with some of the amazing landscapes this continent has to offer, here are a few of my suggestions for fabulous hotels and lodges where you can be surrounded by the natural world
Tierra Patagonia, Chile
This hotel is in a fantastic location in the very south of Chile. It’s surrounded by nature, in splendid isolation, overlooking lake Sarmiento and the iconic towering peaks of Torres del Paine National Park.. Large windows provide the same excellent mountain and lake views from shared spaces as well as from the 37 double rooms and 3 suites, which are warm and welcoming amidst the wilderness. There’s also a relaxing spa that offers steam baths, sauna, heated indoor pool, hydro massage, outdoor Jacuzzi and locker rooms with lush towels and robes. A great place to recharge after a day’s hiking the trails.
Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica, Amazon, Peru This lovely lodge is situated in the heart of a 17,000 hectare private ecological reserve on the banks of the Madre de Dios River and next to the lush Tambopata National Reserve in the Peruvian Amazon Rainforest. Waking to the symphony of tropical birdsong, exploring the verdant Amazon Rainforest by day and ending your days falling asleep to the sounds of the Amazon is all part of this natural Amazon experience.
Caiman Ecological Refuge, Pantanal, Brazil Located in Brazil’s southern Pantanal wetlands, this is a stunning eco-pioneering lodge. Established in 1985 as the first eco-tourism project in the southern region of the Pantanal, the Refúgio Ecológico Caiman Lodge combines the beauty of the surrounding nature and local culture. There are 18 suites with their own terrace, so between activities you can just sit and appreciate nature that’s all around you.
Anavilhanas Jungle Lodge, Amazon, Brazil This is possibly the Brazilian Amazon’s most stylish accommodation. Surrounded by untouched rainforest, the lodge is tucked away among the islands of the Anavilhanas Archipelago, the world’s largest freshwater archipelago, on the Rio Negro. There’s an extensive programme of activities available to explore the lodge’s stunning surroundings.
Mashpi Lodge, Ecuador In Choco Rainforest, only 100km away from Quito, this hotel is every nature lover’s dream where you can encounter 400 species of birds, trees, frogs and endemic species found nowhere else in the world - complete with crashing waterfalls and incredible flora. Get ready to trek down hidden paths, splash through rivers, rise at dawn to spot rare birds, or fly high above it all aboard on the lodge’s Dragonfly Canopy Gondola. Every room has floor-to-ceiling windows so you feel totally immersed your surroundings.
Loi Suites, Iguazu, Argentina This hotel is a welcome boutique option for this area, located in the subtropical jungle of Iryapu, just 15 minutes away from Iguazu Falls. The property is spread around a wonderful pool area, and surrounded by jungle. Designed with a modern feel, its spacious rooms have stunning views over the tropical and the whole hotel has a very relaxing, laid-back and tranquil atmosphere.
