October is a fantastic time to travel, no matter where you are in the world. Leaves in the Northern Hemisphere are turning gorgeous shades of orange and red, while down south, spring is settling in nicely. The weather is pleasant – not too hot, not too cold – and when the peak-season crowds have dissipated, accommodation, flights and activities tend to be a lot more reasonable. For a short haul beach break, head to Cyprus, the Southern Greek Islands like Crete and Rhodes or Turkey, where the weather will be warm (and if you avoid half term week) the crowds will have departed.

If you’re dreaming of a holiday on a tropical beach, October is a great time to visit Mauritius and Hawaii and the Seychelles is between trade winds this month, so it’s an ideal time to holiday here. Further afield, the weather in Queensland is perfect – with balmy days and a warm sea.

For a more active holiday, head to New England to see the famous autumn colours. Or head to Chilean Patagonia for time in the spectacular Torres del Paine National Park. It’s spring down there and it’s a good time to visit before the arrival of the crowds in peak season. And October’s a lovely time of year to visit North Africa and the Middle East – so it’s the ideal time to embark on a tour around Morocco or Jordan.

If you’re a wildlife enthusiast, it’s the end of the peak season in Botswana (Africa’s most expensive safari destination), but while the prices are lower, there are still excellent game viewing opportunities. October sees the annual migration of polar bears in Churchill in Canada – where the bears head for the coast in large numbers and wait for the bay to freeze over. October’s an excellent month to travel to the Galapagos Islands too – again, it’s the end of high season so you’ll see the wildlife without the inflated prices of earlier months.

Like a good festival? Head to Germany for the annual Berlin Festival of Lights where the city transforms into a dazzling display of light art (running from 4th to 13th October this year). Many of the city’s most famous landmarks, cultural monuments, historic buildings, streets, and other locations are illuminated with brilliant light installations, projections, and laser shows. Or fly further afield to New Mexico for the International Balloon Fiesta in Albuquerque where you can spot hundreds of technicolour hot air balloons making their spectacular ascent – it’s become the most photographed event on Earth! This year’s event runs from 5th to 13th October. Make time to visit Santa Fe for a mix of Spanish colonial architecture and earth-coloured historic adobe neighbourhoods.
