As the days get shorter and we start the run-up to Christmas, many people’s thoughts are turning to flying off on holiday to break up the winter months. Even just a week’s holiday can be enough – it’s something to look forward to and provides a welcome change of scenery. There’s still time to book a winter break, whether you’re looking for time by the sea or you want to head off on a touring adventure.
Chilly winter weather in Europe is only really a positive if your idea of the perfect break is being up a mountain, staring down a ski run. But if you’re after blue skies and milder weather and don’t want to fly too far – the usual suspects of the Canary Islands and Cyprus can provide the winter sun you’re looking for, and the lovely islands of Malta and Madeira will be milder than the UK. A bit further afield, and only 7 hours away, the luxury resorts of Dubai and Abu Dhabi can be great options if you want it to be hot. The standard of accommodation is high in both destinations, and you’ll have your pick of a range of gorgeous hotels. If you’re dreaming of something a bit more exotic, the weather is perfect in the Maldives, Kerala, Sri Lanka and Thailand. Or, if you head West, it’s a great time of year to visit the islands of the West Indies - although it's peak season, so prices will be quite high.
If you’re not wedded to a beach holiday, winter’s the perfect time to explore Latin America - it's the dry season in Brazil, Argentina, Colombia and Costa Rica. And January to March are great months to visit the fascinating countries of Vietnam and India.
For a short break I’d highly recommend Cape Town for a few days. Although it’s quite a long flight, you won’t be suffering from jet lag because it’s more or less due South. The weather will be warm, and there are some fantastic places to visit within and outside the city.
Or what an amazing experience it would be to schedule your trip to coincide with festivals or celebrations. There are the carnivals in the run-up to Lent - Carnevale in Venice is spectacular and further afield there are the lively Mardi Gras celebrations in New Orleans or the fabulous Rio Carnival. Or how about heading to the lovely town of Menton on the Côte d’Azur for the Fête du Citron (Lemon Festival)? Every year the town celebrates the annual production of lemons and other citrus fruit. It’s quite a spectacle as all the floats and sculptures are created from lemons and oranges. Net year’s dates are from 15th February to 2nd March.
