GROUP SAFARI + BEACH OR PRIVATE SAFARI + BEACH?

They're not quite the same trip...

This has come up a couple of times recently — and it’s a really good question.
On the surface, both options can look quite similar:a safari followed by some time by the beach.
But how the safari part works — and where you do it — can make a big difference.
Group safari
Lower cost overall
Fixed itinerary and set departure dates
Travel with other guests
Great if you’re happy to go with the flow and don’t mind sharing the experience
Private safari
Higher cost — sometimes significantly
Completely flexible, with your own guide and your own pace
More freedom to tweak timings and spend longer at sightings
Feels much more tailored to you
And here’s the bit that often surprises people - you don’t have to do everything in the same country.
For example, it’s very possible to do a group safari in Kenya — where there are more options and generally better value — and then finish with a beach stay in Zanzibar.
That combination works really well.
Trying to do a group safari in Tanzania can sometimes come out at a similar price to a private safari, which isn’t always what people expect.
(Not always the most welcome discovery when you thought you’d found the “cheaper” option…)
So for some people, a Kenya group safari + Zanzibar gives them a much better overall fit for the budget, without losing the quality of the experience.
Neither option is “better” — it really comes down to what matters most.

Both Kenya and Tanzania are excellent first-time safari destinations, with fantastic game viewing, so you’re not compromising on the experience either way. Some people are very happy to trade a bit of flexibility for a lower overall cost and don’t mind being part of a group. Others would rather have the space, pace and flexibility of a private safari, even if it means adjusting the budget or rethinking the overall trip.
(And occasionally it’s a case of starting with one idea and ending up somewhere completely different once you see how it all fits together…)

Deciding on how you'd like the safari part of your safari + beach holiday to feel is one of those decisions that has quite a big impact on the overall experience — even though on paper it can look like the same holiday.
