For foodies, 2025 offers a world of flavours waiting to be explored. From bustling street markets to exclusive fine-dining establishments, the year’s top culinary destinations promise unforgettable experiences for every palate. Whether you’re drawn to traditional recipes, innovative techniques, or sustainable dining, here are some suggestions for destinations that will hopefully inspire your next adventure.

Lima, Peru, continues to lead the global culinary scene with its fusion of indigenous traditions and international influences. From the tangy freshness of ceviche to the hearty satisfaction of lomo saltado, Lima’s vibrant cuisine is complemented by world-renowned restaurants like Central and Maido. Pair your meals with a hands-on cooking class to bring a piece of Peru home with you.

In Tokyo, Japan, culinary innovation meets deep-rooted tradition. As the city with the most Michelin stars in the world, Tokyo offers unparalleled dining experiences, from intimate omakase sushi counters to bustling ramen shops. Don’t miss the legendary Tsukiji Outer Market, where you can savour street food like takoyaki and yakitori while exploring the local food culture. You'll find a huge choice of restaurants in all price ranges in this fantastic city.

Said by many to be Europe’s gastronomic capital, Lyon, France, offers a taste of culinary excellence rooted in tradition. Its iconic bouchons serve up local specialties like quenelles and saucisson, best enjoyed alongside a glass of Beaujolais wine. Les Halles de Lyon-Paul Bocuse, a celebrated food market, is a must-visit for any foodie seeking authentic flavours.

For street food enthusiasts, Bangkok, Thailand, is a paradise of vibrant flavours and aromas. The city’s night markets are legendary, offering everything from spicy green papaya salad (som tam) to sweet mango sticky rice. For a truly unique experience, visit Jay Fai, the Michelin-starred chef who elevated Thai street food to international acclaim.

Oaxaca, Mexico, is a culinary haven for lovers of rich, bold flavors. Known for its complex mole sauces and crispy tlayudas, Oaxaca also boasts a thriving mezcal scene, offering tastings straight from the source. Time your visit to coincide with the Guelaguetza Festival to enjoy a feast of traditional foods alongside music and dance.

Copenhagen, Denmark, is a leader in modern gastronomy, blending innovation with sustainability. The city’s New Nordic Cuisine movement emphasizes seasonal, locally foraged ingredients, with standout dishes served at restaurants like Noma and Geranium. For a more casual experience, try smørrebrød—open-faced sandwiches that showcase Scandinavian creativity. And you'll always find the freshest and most delicious fish and seafood in this city.

Istanbul, Turkey, offers a sensory journey through its diverse and flavorful cuisine. From the savoury delights of meze and kebabs to the sweet decadence of baklava, every meal in Istanbul tells a story of cultural fusion. Don’t miss the Spice Bazaar, where you can shop for authentic Turkish spices and teas to bring a taste of Istanbul home with you.

For breathtaking landscapes paired with bold flavours, Cape Town, South Africa, is an essential destination. The city’s seafood is amazing, while dishes like bobotie reflect its diverse cultural influences. There are some fabulous restaurants around the city that won't break the bank. A visit to the Stellenbosch wine region rounds out the experience, with world-class wines perfectly paired with gourmet meals.

Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, offers an explosion of flavour in every dish. Whether it’s a steaming bowl of pho, a crispy banh mi sandwich, or a sweet, creamy Vietnamese iced coffee, the city’s food scene combines simplicity with depth. A guided street food tour is the best way to uncover hidden gems and is fantastic fun, particularly by tuk tuk!

Finally, Melbourne, Australia, stands out for its multicultural dining scene and coffee culture. The city’s fusion of Asian and European influences is reflected in its innovative dishes, while bustling markets and food festivals showcase its culinary diversity. I can vouch for the quality of restaurants in this city - I ate by far the best food of my Australian trip here in some amazing restaurants.
